Your Class Schedule at Ligo Dojo  (Adult/Teen Class)

Your training experience at Ligo Dojo BEGINS with just 2 classes per week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30pm until 7:50pm. (Not available these times? See our Build Your Own Schedule option, below.) In accordance with our Team Training mentality all students at Ligo Dojo endeavor to attend ALL classes, and are encouraged to consider this carefully before registering. Content delivery is brisk, and students who miss classes risk falling behind. The ADVANTAGE to learning like this is that students find themselves swept up in a group success momentum that carries them forward to goals they couldn’t even fathom before starting. The downside – and there is one! – is for prospective students who aren’t available during these times, or for those are irregular in their commitment. Please consider carefully!

Training on class days when the the student feels energetic, AS WELL AS ON DAYS WHEN THEY DON’T, teaches resilience, and resilience is a necessary quality that the martial artist develops traditionally by training MANY hours every day. Acknowledging that such a commitment is unrealistic for students living busy lives, we provide the experience of the dedicated martial artist who sacrifices and perseveres to train, by inviting them to hold themselves to a “never miss class” mentality. Of course life happens, and some absences are unavoidable, but the result tends to be that our students are tougher in the class average, JUST BY ATTENDING 2 CLASSES PER WEEK.

Our Saturday Class

Once Ligo Dojo students gains some familiarity with our routines they are INVITED to join our Saturday class, often held 8:30 a.m.  There is SOME collaboration on setting this time: We set it based on a majority of students’ availability, and reschedule by consensus when students are away. The CONTENT of this program is different, yet complementary. For more, please visit our separate Chapel Hill Hoshokai – Martial Arts page (Read here to understand content, not program parameters. This link will open a new window to a SEPERATE website). The cost is an additional $50/month, once the student OPTS to join this training. Please DO consider whether you’re available for this 3rd class session. You will likely WANT it once you get to understand what’s there.

Build Your Own Schedule?

We recognize that some prospective students might not be available during our once-per-week class schedule (Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:30pm). Accordingly, we would like to invite you to build your own 2x per week class schedule, provided you are at least 2, or hopefully 3, new members who want to learn at a certain time per week that YOU propose. (Students must be enrolled with 1-year membership.) Prospective students considering this option should consider the following caveat: This new class session would start as a semi-private class for those 2 or 3 members with Sensei Ligo, and students should understand that learning privately is LESS efficient than joining a group composed of preestablished students. Our training is built on a senior-junior system in which beginner and advanced students train together, and the role model provided by the senior students helps beginners learn twice as fast. So, we can build a class for you if you’re unavailable at our existing class time, but A. we would encourage you to TRY first to adjust your schedule to join the class we have, and B. if you DO build your own class, over time we will likely work to uncover flexibility in either group in order to eventually combine groups together. Whatever class you build, it should still be two classes per week, and students must still endeavor to have consistent attendance.

Want MORE Training?

We recommend seeing how it goes first, at our provided class times. Our training is intense, and the sacrifice required to attend nearly all classes can be intense as well. That said, there are MANY other training opportunities. Students are almost always in early, practicing before class, and advanced students have their own keys to the dojo, and train on their own schedule (once we know them well enough to trust that they’re using the facility appropriately.)

A kata workout, above, at Ligo Dojo. And a demonstration of Bunkai Kumite, below. Bunkai means “application” or “disassembly.”  It is the Art of “practicing and understanding the movements of Kata,” kata which otherwise means little more than a stylized dance. The video below may take a moment to load, but the training of Bunkai is central to our program, so it’s a recommended watch!
